I have never had to read a professional book in my time as an education major; that changed last semester. In my Classroom Management course in the Fall of 2013, my professor introduced to my class a book called The First Days of School. So what is it about? It's about a lot of things that teachers, administrators, and student-teachers should read simply because it has five major things that we stress over about: Being an effective teacher with positive expectations, classroom management, and lesson mastery. It also helps in being a professional in the education field. So the question is what to look for in the first two chapters?
The first chapter is the introduction and how to be a teacher (especially for being a first year teacher). The second chapter is about the importance of having positive expectations, students' success, how to dress for success (sounds familiar from high school), how to invite students to learn, and how to increase the positive student behavior.
Golden Lines
"You were hired to affect lives." (p.7)
An effective teacher has positive expectations for student success, is an extremely good classroom manager, and knows how to design lessons for student mastery." (p. 9)
"If you want positive results from your life, you must keep certain responsibilities in focus: work in collegial manner with your colleagues, associate with and learn from positive mentors, join a professional organization, an continue to learn through classes, workshops, conferences, in-service meetings, books, journals, tapes, and advanced degrees." (p. 18)
"It is on thing to know what you are doing. It is another to know how to do it. Most important, you need to know why you are doing what you are doing." (p. 30)
Students tend to learn as little or as much as their teachers expect. Teachers who set and communicate high expectations to all their students obtain greater academic performance from theses students than do teachers who set low expectations." (p. 40)
"You are treated how you are dressed." (p. 51)
Strategies
According to the text, clothing worn by teachers affects the work, attitude, and discipline of students. Four main traits that affect on how you present yourself to your students are for: respect, credibility, acceptance, and authority. So don't dress casually, dress professionally!
